Why do marriages end? The reality is that most people still don’t know why relationships, even committed relationships like marriages, ultimately come to an end. The problem is that approximately 50 percent of all marriage will eventually lead to divorces, which can bring additional headaches and potentially leave the ex-spouses with financial problems that affect them for the rest of their lives. That’s because divorce can be a messy, expensive experience for the participants.

One of the best ways to avoid a contentious divorce that seemingly has no end in sight is to have an experienced, knowledgeable family law and divorce attorney on your side. A qualified family law attorney can help to guide you through the complicated New Jersey divorce court systems and make the process as painless as possible.

Of course, regardless of complicated your divorce process is, you may want to examine the circumstances of your divorce and consider why things ultimately went sour in your marital relationship. Although most people involved in divorces will typically say that they simply “started living separate lives,” the truth is usually much more complicated than that.

A recent post on the HuffingtonPost.com website and Facebook page asked divorced people to speak up about what truly led to the end of their marriages. Some of the most interesting responses included the following:

  1. The spouses simply didn’t trust each other. A lack of trust can be a major dealbreaker in a marriage, especially when the spouses are not honest about important issues like financial matters. Moreover, said at least one respondent on the Huffington Post website, a lack of trust between the spouses can also result in a lack of intimacy.
  2. There was a lack of open communication. One respondent, a formerly married man, said that he and his wife never really took the time to discuss “big life decisions” with each other. This meant that, right from the beginning, neither spouse truly understood what the other one wanted from their marriage.
  3. At least one spouse failed to prioritize the marriage. It is important for married people to make sure that their spouse knows how vital and valuable they are. When one spouse is always too busy with friends, work, or something else, the other spouse might start to feel neglected and unimportant.
