No child should have to endure the pain and indignity that comes with being bullied. However, unfortunately, bullying continues to be a pervasive force in New Jersey schools. When it becomes evident that your child is being bullied, it’s critical that you take swift and immediate action to break the cycle and put an end to the problem. Distinguishing between signs of bullying and normal adolescent behavior can difficult, here are a few things to look for:

Profound Fear of Going to School
We’re not talking about the general aversion to school that many students exhibit. It’s not unusual to try to get out of going to school when a kid hasn’t studied, done homework or isn’t looking forward to something scheduled in class. However, bullied children often have a profound physical reaction to having to go. They may fake sick more often than normal or even talk about changing schools. If this happens, talk to your child and their teachers to find out what’s going on.

Unexplained Injuries
You know your child. If you have a real athlete on your hands, injuries may be the norm. However, don’t ignore marks and bruises on the body that your instincts tell you have nothing to do with extracurricular activities. Start asking questions. The longer this problem persists without intervention, the higher the level of physical danger your child faces.

Consistently Lost or Stolen Money or Property
Take continuous inventory your child’s belongings – especially electronics, money, school supplies and clothing. If they seem to be missing things a lot, you need to address the issue of whether or not their stuff is being taken by others.

Once it is determined that your child is being bullied, talk to school officials and an experienced attorney immediately. New Jersey has extremely severe HIB (Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying) laws. Don’t let your child suffer in silence; it’s time to put the bully on the defensive.
