Superstar singer Mariah Carey recently settled her contentious divorce from Nick Cannon, according to media reports.

The Carey-Cannon divorce settlement was reached just a few days before Carey and her new fiancé, businessman James Packer, announced their own break-up. As a result, news of the end of the divorce proceedings did not generate a lot of media coverage until now.

Carey and Cannon got married in April 2008. The couple has been going through divorce proceedings since December 2014, with one of the major sticking points in the negotiations being custody of the couple’s two children. The kids, twins, are both five years old. Both Carey and Cannon wanted to maintain child custody, so the divorce settlement grants joint custody of the children. It is unclear if either spouse will be paying child support under the terms of the divorce agreement. A source with knowledge of the divorce agreement spoke to the media and said that Carey and Cannon are deeply committed to being co-parents going forward.

In addition to resolving issues like child custody, Cannon ultimately agreed to his ex-wife Carey’s demand to enforce a prenuptial agreement and signed off on the divorce settlement. The prenup calls for Carey and Cannon to keep the individual income they earned during the marriage. While this sort of asset division arrangement is often included in a prenuptial agreement, it is especially important when the marriage involves spouses with high net worths.
