The divorce of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie has sent shockwaves across the Internet, with seemingly every website in the world reporting on the sudden breakup of the Hollywood power couple.

Pitt was previously married to Jennifer, another major Hollywood star. Meanwhile, Jolie was previously wed to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, making this her third marriage.

Documents filed with the divorce court indicate that Pitt and Jolie legally separated on September 15, 2016. Now the couple appears to be headed for a divorce.

Pitt and Jolie first began dating in 2004, shortly after meeting on the set of the Hollywood blockbuster Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The couple’s relationship became tabloid fodder because Pitt was married to another major Hollywood actress, Jennifer Aniston, at the time. Less than a year later, Pitt and Aniston got divorced.

The end of Pitt and Jolie’s high-profile marriage comes a little over two years after the couple officially tied the knot in August 2014. Although Pitt and Jolie were married for just two years, they were in a relationship for more than a decade and had six children together.

Child custody figures to a major issue during the divorce. Pitt and Jolie have six children together.

Since both Pitt and Jolie are major movie stars with considerable net worths, division of assets and property could also be an issue in the divorce. Jolie has reportedly requested that she be allowed to keep 100 percent of her earnings since the date of the couple’s separation. Division of other assets would be determined at a later date.

Reactions to the Pitt-Jolie Divorce

Pitt expressed his sadness at the dissolution of the marriage, saying that he is “saddened” by all of this and that his main focus right now is the well-being of his children.

After word of the Pitt-Jolie divorce started to circulate, the couple’s famous friends and family members spoke to the media and expressed surprise at the sudden split. Jon Voight, the Oscar-winning actor and father of Jolie, said that he was sad to hear the news. Meanwhile, George Clooney, the mega-star who has starred with Pitt in several movies, called the divorce “unfortunate.”

The couple’s divorce comes one year after they starred together in By the Sea, a high-profile Hollywood movie about a couple whose marriage was disintegrating. Jolie wrote and directed the film, but she made a point of differentiating her own marriage from the marriage depicted on screen. The marital issues seen in the film “aren’t our issues,” Jolie said in an interview about the movie.
