Fashion designer Georgina Chapman recently finalized her divorce from film producer Harvey Weinstein in a settlement that granted Chapman $15 to $20 million and custody of the couple’s children, according to a recent article in the New York Daily News.
The settlement reflected the terms of the couple’s prenuptial agreement, which called for Weinstein to pay $300,000 in spousal support for each year the marriage lasted if it lasted less than ten years. If it lasted more than ten years, Weinstein was to pay $400,000 per year. The couple had been married nine years, according to the New York Daily News.
Chapman is also expected to receive custody of the couple’s children, ages 4 and 7.
The custody settlement follows an attempt by Weinstein’s first wife, Eve Chilton, to get a $5 million prepayment on the film producer’s child support obligations. The judge in that case declined to order the pre-payment, according to the New York Daily News.
High net worth divorces are often complex not only for emotional reasons, but because the couple’s finances often reflect significant complexity in asset ownership, investments, businesses, goodwill and branding, and other items of value. Often, couples anticipating a divorce with significant assets at stake need not only an experienced lawyer but also the assistance of other qualified professionals such as accountants and appraisers.
