A New Jersey state grand jury indicted two women on insurance fraud charges.

The suspects are sisters who live in Pine Hill and Pennsauken, respectively. According to the NJ Attorney General’s Office, the suspects scammed Geico after being involved in an auto accident on a Camden NJ road. The Pennsauken woman was reportedly driving her sister’s car, a Chevrolet Aveo, when she was struck by another car that ran a stop sign.

Since the motor vehicle being driven by the Pennsauken woman was owned by her sister, the Pine Hill woman, the women were worried that Geico might not cover their insurance claim. So the sisters allegedly lied to the insurance carrier and stated that the vehicle owner was actually behind the wheel and that the Pennsauken NJ woman was just a passenger.

Additionally, the suspects allegedly went beyond lying about which sister was actually in the car when the auto accident occurred. According to authorities, the suspects also committed fraud by attempting to get thousands of dollars in compensation for medical bills. The sister who was not involved in the car crash allegedly asked for $5K to cover hospital expenses and another $950 to compensate her for lost wages due to time missed from work.

Geico officials became suspicious of the suspects’ insurance claims, prompting an investigation by NJ state prosecutors. Authorities eventually made the decision to file criminal charges against both women. Now the suspects have been indicted by a Trenton grand jury on charges of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.

Christopher Iu, the acting insurance fraud prosecutor for New Jersey, issued a statement about the indictment and warned anyone thinking about committing fraud to be aware of the potential consequences. Iu said that NJ prosecutors won’t hesitate to crack down on anyone who fraudulently claims that they are owed even a “relatively small insurance payout.”
